| The original Johnny Tractor story (left) published in 1958 still delights young readers more than 30 years later! Originally published in 1959, the Corny Cornpicker story (right) was reprinted in 1988 in the larger format book shown here. |
For a lighter read, you may enjoy the entertainment of John
Deere children’s books. From the first pair of storybooks in 1958-59, John Deere has
become a favorite topic of story hour and bedtime stories for generations of little folks.
Storybooks for little folks
Originally published in 1958-59, two storybooks have now become
popular collectibles for grown-ups.
Johnny Tractor and His Pals and Corny Cornpicker
Finds a Home have delighted children for the past 30 years. Louise Price Bell wrote
the Johnny Tractor book and Lois Zortman Hobbs penned the Corny Cornpicker story.
Deere’s staff artist, Roy A. Bostrom, illustrated both books with colorful
cartoon-like sketches.
Due to the growing demand for these books, Deere & Company
published a reprinted version of each in 1988.
These larger (8.5x11-inch) editions look quite a bit different
from the original 7x8-inch books but still give readers the same entertaining tale and
colorful illustrations of the first pair. As collectibles, the two original books can be
found on the memorabilia market for $50-75, although The Green Girl recently snagged a
Johnny Tractor book from Florida for just $20 on Ebay!

Each character toy book opens up into a storybook
surprise. A 10-page mini-book tells the tale of the character and his role on the farm or
construction site. |
Toy books do double duty
John Deere’s latest venture in this area is under the John
Deere Kids line.
Called "Toy Books," these soft rubbery replicas of
machinery with real, rolling wheels actually open up into a rugged 10-page storybook.
From the famed Johnny Tractor star to Corey Combine and Peter
Pickup characters, these toy books are sure to entertain even the most fidgety child
during a long church service.
A line of construction equipment toy books is also available
—Ýthese yellow versions have names like Danny Dozer, Grady Grader, and Luke
Loader.
