The Green Girl reflects on 2001

What a year! Just over 365 days ago, my first book, JOHN DEERE COLLECTIBLES, came out.

Ý

The author with the staff of Books N Things in Spencer, Iowa for a signing session in March 2001. Great media coverage included a live interview on KICD radio!

Ý

And thanks to myÝloyal fans, friends and family, the entire print run sold out before the year 2001 even ended.

That’s right…more than 6,000 copies are currently in the hands of the fine folks who bleed green. And another 1,000 enthusiasts have already spoken for the majority of the next batch that will be hot off the press later this month.

I have to admit I’m awfully proud to see such strong sales, although I knew this book was what "greenies" wanted and needed to help them in this hobby. I guess it reminds me of that saying from Field of Dreams (a neat Iowa attraction): "Build it and they will come." In my case, it was "Write it and they’ll buy it!"

What makes me even happier is hearing how much you like the book!

I enjoy your stories about seeing things from your own collections in the book. Or how you wish you hadn’t thrown away something from your childhood now that you see how much it’s worth today. I also get a kick out of hearing where you’re from and what connects you to John Deere and why you collect green goodies.

Email me if you haven’t yet told me what you liked (or didn’t) about the JOHN DEERE COLLECTIBLES book. And if you have any advice for how to make the second edition even better, please share it!

For those of you who just discovered JOHN DEERE COLLECTIBLES even existed, don’t despair. You can still get a copy from almost any bookstore and on-line vendors like Amazon or Barnes & Noble. You’ll probably have to wait a while for the reprint to reach the publisher’s warehouse but your patience will be rewarded!

If you can’t wait that long, you can still get an autographed special edition with my personal John Hancock direct from me. But quantities are VERY LIMITED as these are the last few from the first print run! So place your order today for this classic collector’s copy!

It was a real treat to meet many of you over this past year at various events. From the Tulare, California show to the National Two-Cylinder Show in Oklahoma…from my fan-packed tour of my old stomping grounds in Northwest Iowa to the home base of the green machines in mighty Moline for the Grand Opening of the new Collectors Center and Moline Tractor & Plow Co…be sure to keep an eye out for The Green Girl’s next author tour in your neck of the woods.

Ý

My next stop is in Moline the first week of March for a joint event that will draw top collectors from across the country. It starts with a 2-day Memorabilia Conference hosted by the John Deere Collectors Center at Moline Tractor & Plow Co. And the rest of the week and weekend will be the Gathering of the Green at the Holiday Inn. Plan now to attend if you’re a diehard Deere fan!

As for last week’s column featuring a calendar of "other-color" tractors, I must admit that Ms. Field Reporter gets feisty when I don’t send in my story in time for Monday morning! My apologies to her for another last-minute late excuse and my apologies to my green fans for having to look at those red Farmalls on the cover. The good news is that the calendar’s January feature is an all-green John Deere Model 80…a great choice to start off another Great Green year!

You can look forward to another year of educational and entertaining columns from The Green Girl. If you have any ideas for a topic to cover, please e-mail me and suggest it!

A signing session at the B.Dalton Bookseller in a mall in Visalia, California on a Friday night didn't go over all that well but it was a blast to see my books in the LOCAL INTEREST display.
